Over $50,000 Available in Scholarships & Grants

Employees of school districts and organizations who are members of School Systems FCU are eligible for scholarships and grants each year.

  • Family members of SSFCU members are also eligible for the scholarships and grants listed below. This includes immediate family members as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
  • Remember that family members of School Systems FCU members are eligible to join School Systems FCU.
  • The availability and funding for the awards offered by School Systems FCU are made possible through our members’ use of their VISA Gold Cards, Credit Union Association of NewYork, Professional Planning Group and the Education Exchange College Grant Program. All income earned by the credit union through the use of School Systems FCU VISA and VISA Gold cards is distributed to the scholarship and grant fund.

Each year, members and local high school and college students obtain scholarships, grants and awards through School Systems FCU. Just click on the scholarship, grant or award, or scroll down the list to see if you qualify.

Patricia A. Gee Memorial Scholarship

The Award: $1,000 scholarship for the freshman year of college

Eligibility: The Patricia A. Gee Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to a high school senior planning to enroll as a full-time freshman at an accredited college or university, whose high school record shows above average academic achievement and who has demonstrated strong leadership abilities. An applicant should have a composite SAT score of at least 1000 and a high school average of 88 or above. Leadership abilities should be evident through involvement in non-classroom high school organizations, the local community, service groups or other similar activities. The applicant must be a member of School Systems FCU or a family member of a member of the credit union.

Application Process: Along with the application, students are asked to submit two letters of recommendation (which can be copies of letters used for college applications) and an essay describing their leadership roles (or a copy of your college application essay). In addition, students must also forward a transcript of their high school record (including SAT scores) to School Systems FCU. Applications are available now through the website and in branches.

Entry Deadline: January 30, 2010

Credit Union Association of New York

The Award: $500 award payable to the recipient and the educational institution

Eligibility: The applicant must be a member in good standing of a participating credit union. The member must be a high school senior at the time of application. Scholarship funds must be used: (1) for tuition, and (2) only at an accredited educational institution.

Application Process: Along with the completed Application for this award, students are asked to submit an official high school transcript documenting GPA for grades 9 - 11, an SAT/PSAT/ACT transcript, and a typed essay responce. All completed applications will then be returned to the credit union to be forwarded to the CUANY. Please refer to the application for more details. Education Exchange College Grant Program

The Award: A total of 34 college grants will be awarded in Education Exchange College Grant program as follows:

  • Four (4) $5,000 grant recipients
  • Thirty (30) $1,000 grant recipients

Eligibility: To be eligible to enter the Education Exchange program, you must meet all of the following criteria. EDS employees and their immediate families are ineligible to enter.

  • You must be a graduating high school senior at time of application submission
  • You must be a U.S. citizen
  • You must be able to provide written acceptance to an accredited 4-year college.
  • You must submit all required attachments with your completed application form.

Application Process: Applications for this award will be available at the credit union in December/January. Along with a completed application, students are required to submit the following:

  • Copy of high school transcripts with your GPA, honors/AP classes, and SAT or ACT scores noted.
  • Two letters of recommendation. One letter must be from a teacher or school administrator and one letter must be from a personal reference. Please be certain that each letter has the reference's name, address and phone number. References should also include how long they have known you and in what context.
  • Additional Requirements: Final Judging Round
    If you are selected to proceed to the final judging round, you will be notified and asked to verify the facts stated in your application by providing the following materials:
    • Current, official high school transcripts with school seal, including SAT or ACT scores.
    • A copy of pages 1 and 2 of your parents'/guardians' most recent Federal Income Tax Return.
    • An acceptance letter to an accredited four-year college.

School Systems FCU Community Service Award

The Award: $100 award for a student who exemplifies leadership in the community

Eligibility: This award is given to students throughout Albany and Rensselaer Counties. Each member school will select the student based on leadership roles and activities that the student takes on in his or her community.

Application Process: High schools that fall within our membership will be sent the information regarding this award. It is up to each school to select a student to receive this award. Check with your guidance office for more information.


Current College Students

School Systems FCU Academic Grant

The Award: $500 grant for the sophomore, junior, senior year of college or graduate study

Eligibility: The School Systems FCU Academic Grant is awarded annually to an applicant who is pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university. The applicant must show academic achievement by maintaining at least a 3.0 grade point average out of a possible 4.0, and have progressed to the level of sophomore or above. Special consideration will be given to those applicants that meet the above criteria and can demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a member of School Systems FCU.

Application Process: Along with the application, students are asked to submit a copy of the most recent college/university transcript and a letter of application stating from a financial standpoint, what impact this scholarship would have on your education. Applications are available now through the website and in branches.

Entry Deadline: January 30, 2010

Professional Planning Group Academic Grant

The Award: $500 grant for the sophomore, junior, senior year of college or graduate study

Eligibility: The Professional Planning Group Academic Grant is awarded annually to an applicant who is currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in the Business or Finance curriculum at an accredited college or university. The applicant must show academic achievement by maintaining at least a 3.0 grade point average out of a possible 4.0, and have progressed to the level of sophomore or above by fall semester of 2006. Special consideration will be given to those applicants that meet the above criteria. The applicant must be a member of School Systems FCU.

Application Process: Along with the application, students are asked to submit a copy of the most recent college/university transcript and a letter of application stating your educational and career goals. Applications are available now through the website and in branches.
